Many people in Canada use a boiler system to heat their homes. Boilers are designed to heat water, turn it into steam, and push that steam throughout the house to generate heat.

They are an efficient and inexpensive way to transport heat throughout your home or place of business. But like anything else in the home, boilers are subject to repairs over time.

Many things can go wrong with your boiler, and when something does go wrong, you will have to repair it or replace it. So let’s talk more about the average cost of boiler repair and replacement in Canada.

What do boiler repair and replacement cost in Canada?

The boiler repair and replacement cost in Canada will vary depending on the type of boiler you select, the brand, and who are you are choosing to do the repair or replacement.

With that being said, the average cost to repair a boiler in Canada is $399. Depending on what is wrong with your boiler, you should expect to pay anywhere between $200 and $600 for your repair.

This may seem like a lot of money, but it’s nothing in comparison to what it costs to replace your boiler completely. If you need or choose boiler replacement, you’re looking at a range between $3,650 to $8,140.

If you wish to install a high-end model with high efficiency, you could be looking at upwards of $11,000. The average cost of replacing a boiler is $5,744. On top of that, you will have to pay labor costs which can range anywhere between $1,000 and $2,500.

What determines the cost of a boiler repair?

As you can see, the cost of repairing your boiler in Canada can range significantly. But why such the range? Several different factors go into determining the price of a boiler repair:

1) The Problem

The most significant factor to consider when repairing your boiler is the problem at hand. Depending on what is wrong with your boiler, you will need different parts.

It should come as no surprise that different parts cost different amounts. If all you need is a thermostat replacement, for example, your bill will be lower – probably between $100 to $300. But if you need a circulator pump replacement, you could be looking at a bill over the $900 mark.

2) The Warranty

Here’s the good news. If you still have a warranty on your boiler, your bill could be a lot less. Depending on the problem, you may not have to pay for your repair at all.

Most boilers come with part warranties and installation warranties, so be sure to check both to see if you have any coverage before paying for new parts or installation.

3) Your contractor of choice

Prices for boiler repair can range significantly from contractor to contractor. Each contractor charges a little differently for their service. Some contractors charge by the hour, while others set a flat rate.

Some also charge a service call fee, meaning they charge a fee simply for coming to diagnose the problem. Always be sure to ask your contractor upfront about any fees to prevent any unwanted surprises.

What can go wrong with my boiler?

Five of the most common boiler problems include leaks, low pressure, no heat, frozen pipes, and radiator faults. Other common problems that boilers face include thermostat issues, gurgling noises, pilot light problems, no power, and complete breakdown.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of things that can go wrong with your boiler. If you aren’t sure of the exact problem you’re having, it’s best to consult a professional boiler repair contractor.

Should I repair or replace it?

Because boiler replacement can be so expensive, the ideal option is always to repair. With that being said, there are some factors that you should take into consideration when making a decision.

First off, if your boiler isn’t that old, you shouldn’t need to replace it. In most cases, your warranty will cover the necessary parts for repair.

If this is the first time your boiler has ever needed repair, you shouldn’t have to replace it yet. With that being said, if you find that you are constantly repairing your boiler system, it might save you money to replace instead of repair.

Want to avoid costly repair and replacement bills? It’s recommended that you have your boiler inspected by a professional at least once per year. Doing so can help detect minor issues before they become larger ones, saving you money in the long run.
